Opportunity Gardens in Rockwell City

Opportunity Living through the assistance of the Calhoun County Community Foundation, Pringle Trust, and private donors has developed a community gardening space in Rockwell City.  Garden spaces are available for community groups and private citizens to sponsor vegetable and flower beds in both raised and in-ground plots on a first come, first served basis.

These spaces are an excellent opportunity for residents and community groups who may not have the ability to establish gardens because of renting or inadequate yard space to become involved in producing food and ornamental beauty for the Rockwell City community.  This project is intended to be a catalyst for neighborhood development, opportunities for recreation and education, a stimulating area for social interactions with our clients and residents, and a way to help beautify the entire neighborhood.  The community atmosphere created by the gardens is also beneficial to those who may wish to have family events utilizing Opportunity Living's miniature golf facilities.  A restroom is available on site and will be open according to posted hours.

Wheelchair Swing

This is the new wheelchair swing (the client can stay in their wheelchair and swing) which was donated by the Fonda Presbyterian Church.  A special thanks to them for their generosity and kindness.

"If we approach the garden and the plants within it as an adventure, not a chore, as an opportunity, not an obligation, then we can relax and enjoy the people/plant connection."   (Hank Bruce & Tomi Jill Folk)

This picture was taken last Fall at the completion of Phase One, cement work, forms for the raised gardens, and plumbing.  Picture taken from the northeast corner of the raised garden section.
Completed raised garden section, completely wheelchair accessible.  Each garden has its own water supply.  There are two feature gardens, the round in the foreground and the ground level (with the sign).
Just a portion of the ground level gardens available.  Each garden section will be approximately 8' x 10'.  We will be installing dividers for the plots.  This part is located on the east side of the raised gardens. There is more space on the north side of the raised gardens.   The wheelchair swing is on the top left.
This is a close-up of one of the raised gardens.  The white box on the left of the picture is the water faucet cover.  Each garden has its own water supply.  There are 7 raised gardens, all wheelchair accessible.  The wheelchair swing is in the background.
